Le Storyboard
L'étape du Storyboard est absolument cruciale à la production d'un film d'animation. Il s'agit d'un découpage visuel du film qui, grâce à une série de dessins, raconte l'histoire au coup par coup.

Une fois que l'histoire originale a été développée sous forme de scénario, les "storyboarders" traduisent chaque scène à l'aide de plusieurs dessins. Ces dessins sont épinglés, séquence par séquence, sur de larges planches, jusqu'à ce que tout le film soit ainsi visualisé.

Pour ce film-ci, il fallut environ une cinquantaine de ces planches. Et sur chacune d'entre elles, environ soixante-six dessins.

Pour la plupart des films d'animation, le passage du sujet du film au script, puis du script au storyboard est relativement direct. Mais sur ce film, on a rarement suivi la norme. Le premier storyboard prit entre huit et dix mois. Bien que tous les films d'animation soient travaillés au storyboard, dans le cas de l'arrêt sur image, c'est une étape vraiment cruciale.

"Nous sommes très dépendants du storyboard, souligne Kathleen Gavin. Il faut tenir compte du nombre de marionnettes dont nous avons besoin, du nombre de décors à construire, de scènes qui seront filmées ici ou là. Tout ce qui aura lieu doit être noté dans les storyboards."

C'est au storyboard que les idées abstraites sont visualisées pour la première fois. C'est aussi à ce moment que l'on expérimente et que l'on peut se permettre des erreurs à moindre coût.

Dans l'ensemble, les storyboarders jouent un rôle fondamental dans la manière dont les différentes séquences vont évoluer. Une fois le storyboard terminé, on le filme. On crée ainsi un animatique .

Puis, on monte chaque storyboard de manière à obtenir , une fois toutes les bobines assemblées, un film d'une longueur égale à celui du produit fini. Ensuite, on le synchronise avec une bande son dialoguée provisoire.

Petit à petit, l'animatique se transforme en vrai film.

Enfin, au fur et à mesure que chaque séquence est tournée, elle est incorporée à la bobine, à la place de la version storyboard. Ainsi, le réalisateur a toujours à sa disposition un facsimile raisonnablement proche du film
